Hückeswagen Training College – a private initiative of local businesses
We are firmly of the opinion that the best kind of apprenticeship is one that efficiently and seamlessly brings together theoretical learning and hands-on training. This is what gave rise to the idea of bringing forward the professional-training stage and combining it with a general pre-university course. In contrast to a conventional apprenticeship or the final stage of secondary school, this combination offers a chance to benefit from enhanced career opportunities far earlier than is usually the case.
Working in collaboration with the companies Pflitsch, Joh. Clouth and Recknagel, and with this objective in mind, Kuhn Special Steel founded the Hückeswagen Training College (registered as a limited company under the name Berufskolleg Hückeswagen – Privatschule Bergischer Unternehmer gemeinnützige GmbH.
Since June 2010, the college has been offering young people the chance to obtain a combined practical and academic qualification. The three-year course lets them complete an apprenticeship, while at the same time gaining the general university-entrance qualification. Each student’s weekly timetable includes three days’ in-house training on the premises of one of the college’s partner companies, plus two days in the classroom. The college currently offers its students of both sexes specialist apprenticeships in industrial management. As of the 2011/2012 academic year, the college will also be offering training for industrial mechanics and metal machinists, combined in both cases with the German Abitur pre-university qualification.
